Introduction to the Film Forrest Gump Forrest Gump is a very famous film and this film tells us a story about a man named Forrest Gump who has a low IQ and muscle problem. Forrest Gump is considered to be a moron, but fortunately, he makes a symbol for all the good moral characters because of his perfect honesty and kind heart. In his life, there are several important person. First, I want to introduce Jenny, who is one of the most significant women in his life, also a kind and zealous person. However, she is not as lucky as Forrest Gump. She is keen on finishing her America dream--being a famous singer, but she fails at last, even gets to corruption. Their different experiences form a vivid comparison in the film. Later Jenny’s leaving is a shock to Forrest. So he keeps running for many years, which also made him become a topic person. He runs so fast that he becomes a famous football player in college. What is more, Forrest Gump is a man with a sense of responsibility. He loves his mother very much. His mother is the other important person in his life. The minute he is aware that his mother is going to heaven, he goes home in a hurry. He is determined to take good care of his mother at the very urgent time. And he always keeps his mother’s words in mind—“Life is like a box of chocolates: You will never know what you’re going to get” 1. The instruction given by his mother sets believes in Forrest. That is to say, Forrest Gump will try his best to do everything. If not, he won’t know what happens next. But unfortunately, his mother died. After leaving school, he becomes a war hero in Vietnam War because he saves lots of soldier’s lives. And also here he has made two good friends—Bubba and Lieutenant Dan. After the war, he has a chance to be a diplomat of ping-pang. Later, to carry out the promise, which he promised to Bubba, he becomes a captain of a shrimp boat. And also in order to keep his promise that he promises to Lieutenant Dan he becomes a millionaire by chance. Eventually, he has a son with Jenny. There are so many symbols in the film that the film is so successful. Just as at the beginning of the film, there is a feather—a white feather that floats freely in the sky and then floats down by Forrest Gump’s feet. In general, although Forrest Gump is regarded as an idiot, yet he tries his best to perform everything well. The life of Forrest Gump is certainly supernatural and wonderful. The date when the film was show first was 23 June 1994 in Los Angeles, California. And then it was played in Hong Kong on 15 December 1994. This film was cared by lots of common people, and it was also cared by lots of film experts. So it won a lot of awards. In 1995 , it won many awards in Oscar , such as the Best Actor in a Leading Role—Tom Hanks , the Best Director—Robert Zemeckis , the Best Effects , Visual Effect , Best Editing , Best Picture , Best Writing , Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium . And also its Box office was not bad. In USA its Box office was 329,691,196 dollars, and 2,500,000 dollars in China. Such success is prided for everyone who had joined in this film. So this film is very popular among youngsters not only in the USA but in China. We youngsters in China like Forrest Gump first as a symbol of persistence and then as a film character stands for success. He always has the courage and the power to overcome the difficulties through his life, and in the end he becomes a celebrity. And there are many words that inspires we youngsters, one which is typical is that at the very beginning, “Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get” 2. There are also many other typical sentences. “Stupid is as stupid does.” 3 “A promise is a promise.” 4 “There must be something can be done” 5. These words have always inspired youngsters, both in our learning and all through our life. In this film, Forrest is not a real hero like other Hollywood film. The person stand in our sight is not resourceful, wise and handsome. And he also has no ideal. He is a low IQ man and even does not know the meaning that he has created the miracle. But he is just the embodiment of the gracious person. Just as Director Robert Zemeckis has ever said: The great optimism from the heart of Forrest Gump is worth learning. Forrest Gump is almost the representative of all the excellence as honest, keeping promise, brave and adamantine. 6 And all the excellence has lost in this age. II. The Development of Forrest Gump’s Character What build Forrest unique character? I think that is his great mother. If Forrest Gump does not have such a great mother, he will not be like this. The film begins with a feather flying in sky, and then shining at the foot of Forrest Gump sitting on the bench. And our caring Forrest picks it up and carefully put it into his book. Our Forrest is such a kind man even for a feather. Just from there Forrest Gump told his story to the person who sit next to him. And his story is start with his mother’s words “life was like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are gonna get”. This is also the movie’s philosophy. This sentence is also one of the most important rule which Forrest Gump’s mother tells him. Forrest only believes in three things – God, his Momma, and Jenny, and everything else that he experiences in the world has to be filtered through those three things. And Forrest Gump’s mother is the most important person who effects his character, that is why Forrest Gump always says “my mother told me„ „”. And those sentence become a popular mottos cherished by many people. The movie interprets it as that no matter what happens, the best alternativeness for us is “just do it” and try to find the secret of life by ourselves. Forrest Gump’s mother lets him know that if he wants to know what the real life is he must try to find out by himself. So that is the reason Forrest Gump never give up those thing that he wants. That’s what his mother told him. And Forrest likes thinking. We can see the pictures about his families, Bubba’s family and Lt. Dan’s family. Maybe it looks funnily, but we can also see his vivid thoughts. In Forrest Gump’s life he follows his mother’s line and does a great deal of miraculous things. Today lots of youngsters often complain that life is so unfair to them, but in fact the reason is they do not try to do or find what they want. We can learn from there is that we should never give up, do more than complain, keep on delving into life and then good things will eventually happen. Forrest Gump is a lower IQ person and has some muscle problem, but his mother tell him he is not different from anyone else. Because of his muscle problem Forrest must wear a particular knighthead on his legs, it looks strange in fact, but his mother tells him he is the same with others. And she also tells him that they are magic shoes, they can take him to anywhere. One day when Forrest Gump and his mother walked a step, Forrest’s leg was clipped in an exit of a cloaca. This picture was seen by other people. At that moment his mother asked those two people if they have not ever saw a child wearing a leg knighthead. It is an ordinary thing for her that a boy is wearing a particular knighthead. That is the reason why his mother wants to send him study in a normal school no matter how much she will pay for this. A lot of people must know the sentence “Go your own way; let others talk” in The Divine Comedy which is wrote by Dante Alighieri. But who can promise he or she can follow like this line. It is easier to say than to do. Can you insist your opinion and do not care how other people say you are wrong (Of course under the precondition your opinion is right.). Forrest Gump’s mother gives him a lot of living motto. Another is “Stupid is as stupid dose.” When other person asking Forrest “Are you stupid or what’s worry with your leg?” He often replied “Stupid is as stupid dose.” Of course Forrest Gump is not smart, even himself have said that “I’m not a smart man.” And also after Jenny telling him that the child is his baby, he worries about one thing whether his boy is smart or not. His mother must know that Forrest Gump must be asked this question, so she give him a reply, Forrest believe that he is not smart. Forrest Gump gains his self-confidence with his mother’s word. And Stupid is as stupid does. I think maybe we should be “stupid” sometimes in our real life now because being “stupid person” cares less about advantages and disadvantages, thus may release the pressure in our society full of fierce competition. And being stupid sometimes makes us far away from the complicated relationship between people and can give us a chance to think about our life, to give some thoughts to our future. Life is a gift and we should not waste it. You never know what you have to deal with next. So, we should study how to face our life as it comes to us. Sometimes Forrest is a little smart. Because his mother tells him not to get on any stranger’s bus. So the first time he gets on school bus, there is a big problem. Little Forrest introduces himself on his own initiative. And then he knows the driver, so he solves the “big problem”. At last Forrest’s mother has gotten cancer. At the last time, the mother gives her baby her last word, “It's my time. It's just my time. Oh, now, don't you be afraid, sweetheart. Death is just a part of life, something we're all destined to do. I didn't know it. But I was destined to be your momma. I did the best I could.” And those words give Forrest courage to face the death of Jenny. Forrest deals with everything under his mother’s fundamentals. We can see it is the reason of his good moral characters-- honest, keeping his words, conscientious, brave and paying attention to emotion. III. The Character of Forrest Gump A. The Attitude towards Love As I said Forrest only believes in three things – God, his Momma, and Jenny. So Jenny is also another most important woman in his life. And it is also the heart of the story. Jenny is one of his best friends in the life of Forrest. In the 30 years, Forrest has become a football star, a hero of Vietnam War, a member of Ping-Pang diplomacy, a Millionaire or a popular fetish. Forrest’s status has changed a lot. But there is only one diathesis not changing in his life-- his love to Jenny. Despite all his success, the toughest one of all to achieve is his love for Jenny. 1. Protecting Jenny during Their Childhood At first I want to say jenny is a very good girl although she becomes corrupt in her middle-age. And she knows Forrest because of her kindness. That is in the bus she lets Forrest set by her side after he is refused for many times, and then they become friend. In the bus Jenny does not only offer a seat for him, she also makes a seat in little Forrest’s heart. And then they became close friends. Just like Forrest says, “Jenny and I were like peas and carrots.” Forrest is perfectly honest and kind-hearted, so that he makes acquaintance with Jenny. For Forrest, Jenny is the one of the most consistently “good” characters in the film. Jenny’s voice is the sweetest voice in the world, Jenny is the most beautiful name, the time spend with Jenny is the happiest in his life. In the beginning, Jenny is the sole person aside from Forrest’s mother who sees him as a human being. “In fact, the two primary female characters in the movie (Jenny and Mrs. Gump) are the only ones who believe in Forrest completely. All the ‘evil’ acts of Jenny are ascribed to a damaged psyche to her sexual abuse by her father when she is little. She becomes self-destructive because of this, and is only when she realizes that Forrest is the only person who loved her completely and without reservation did she regain her own sense of self-worth and dignity.” 7 Jenny is really an unlucky girl, she has a bad father. And her father always beat her after he is drunk. There is a scene that Jenny and Forrest hide in a field in order to avoid her drunk father. Jenny prays to be a bird. Forrest does not know why, but he does hope her wish will come turn. Forrest is a simple man. It is also because of Jenny; Forrest has learnt how to run. That must be a miracle moment. To Forrest Jenny is very important. The deep love that Forrest holds for Jenny almost penetrates every adventure of Forrest’s. No matter where he is, what he is doing, he misses Jenny and hopes that whatever she is doing makes her happy. So he is exceedingly impulsive when Jenny is hurt by anybody. He is very fond of Jenny. Every time he fights against whomever he is, in order to protect his sweetheart--Jenny. He doesn’t think about what the consequence is. For example, in their college time, Jenny’s boyfriend send Jenny back, and Forrest misapprehend that Jenny is hurt by her boyfriend. So Forrest rushes to him, and beat him without any words. And after the war, Jenny and Forrest meet again, when Forrest sees Jenny is beaten by her another boyfriend, and Forrest also rushes to him, and beat him without say any words. I think that is the way that Forrest shows his love to Jenny. He wants to protect Jenny in any case. He does not care weather Jenny loves him, and he does not care what is Jenny’s rewards for him. He do not care all of this. The only thing he cares about is that Jenny is his girl, and he must protect her. That is the difference between him and us. Today our youngsters often want the rewards if they do something for others. If someone gives his or her love to another one, he or she will want the other one to give their love to him or her. Or they will do some extremely things. 2. Waiting for Jenny after Joining the Army Forrest is a pure image man. Forrest loves Jenny very much. And anything can make him think about Jenny. And Jenny is the only woman Forrest loved. Forrest loves Jenny from his childhood. But in Jenny’s mind Forrest is not the right man in her life. Jenny wants to be a singer, but it is not easy. So Jenny become a degenerate symbol, even she takes drug at last. Forrest and Jenny are separated for three times, and it is Jenny who leaves Forrest. But Forrest is keeping on waiting for Jenny forever. Forrest keeps writing to Jenny all the time no matter what happens and how difficult it is. Even when he is in the Vietnam War, we can see Forrest keeps writing to Jenny almost every day, no matter how bad the weather is. His letter is not important, he just writes about what he does every day, and tells her he is very good. And he signs “Loved Forrest Gump”. We can see Forrest’s love is very pure. Once Jenny says “You do not know what love is.” One evening Forrest makes a proposal to Jenny, but Jenny refuses. Forrest says “I am not smart, but I know what love is.” 8 Yes, he does know what love is. This sentence looks antinomy, but just because those words are sincere, sounds more moving than Jenny’s “I love you” after she has experienced a lot of difficult things. Forrest teaches us that pure and true love can be promising and rewarding. 3. Being Married with Jenny Forrest’s love is adamantine. So at last he is married with Jenny. It is fortunate that Jenny brings up Forrest’s son. And at last he becomes a company and hope to Forrest. The film regards Forrest and Jenny as representative of our booming generation. They are all of us, Forrest is the simple naive side of us, and Jenny is the hard, sad, embittered side. Maybe they experience everything we will experience. So the film tells us what the best way for us to go through life is. Love is with a core of decent moral values, supplemented by an awareness of reality and heartfelt joy. In the end of the film, in front of Jenny’s grave, we will never forget what Forrest says to Jenny: “You died on a Saturday morning. And I had you placed here under our tree. And I had that house of your father's bulldozed to the ground. Momma always said death was a part of life. I surely wish it wasn't. Little Forrest, he's doing just fine. About to starting to school again soon. I make his breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. I make sure he combs his hair and brushes his teeth every day. I will teach him how to play ping-pong. He is really good. We fish a lot. And every night, we read a book. He is so smart, Jenny. You had been so proud of him. I am. He, uh, wrote a letter, and he says I can not read it. I am not supposed to, so I will just leave it here for you. Jenny, I do not know if Momma was right or if, if it is Lieutenant Dan. I do not know if we each have a destiny, or if we are all just floating around accidental-like on a breeze, but I, I think maybe it is both. Maybe both is happening at the same time. I miss you, Jenny. If there is anything you need, I would not be far away.” 9 Those words move lots of us. We can see Forrest is a good husband and father. So, there is a compare between Forrest and Jenny. Forrest’s love never changes, but Jenny has a lot of love inamorato. B. Keeping Promise for His Friends The most impressive scene, however, is the most dynamic: the Vietnam War. It is, for me, the high point of the film. And there Forrest meets his two friends—Bubba and Lt. Dan. To his friend, Forrest is very pure-hearted. 1. The Promise for Bubba When being sent to the Vietnam War, the scene of offering seat is again performed, Forrest accept the offer from a young African American a man named Bubba, who is also from Alabama and has a goal to be a shrimp boat captain. Forrest thinks he is very adapt to army life, because his boss praises him like a genius. That is the pure Forrest Gump. Bubba is innocent and not very bright on the surface but turns out to have a remarkable amount of knowledge. The driver even shouts to him. No one care who he is. But Forrest and Bubba see in each other decency and goodness along with substantial abilities, and this makes them good friends “like brothers and stuff”. Bubba likes shrimp very much, so the conversation between them is all about Bubba’s dream—wants to be a shrimp boat captain. And Bubba also tells Forrest lots of knowledge about shrimp. Although Forrest dose not understand what Bubba said, he does know Bubba wants to be a shrimp captain. So when Bubba is killed, Forrest carries out an obligation to his friend to take care of his family. This promise is not an easy promise to keep, because it seems that Bubba’s family dose not appreciate Forrest’s help. But Forrest manages to achieve the promise through determined effort, intense loyalty, and a little luck. He follows up on Bubba’s plan and gives Bubba’s mother her share. Forrest’s simple, literal interpretation of everything around him and his tenacity and loyalty to a dead friend, a disabled lieutenant and others turn him into a model soldier earning him the Congressional Medal of Honor, a business partner, a fortunate being, and a friend for life. That is Forrest! A lot of people give other person promise easily, but a few people can carry their promise out. 2. The Promise for Lieutenant Dan Besides Bubba, there is another friend Forrest has made in the army—that is Lieutenant Dan. Lt. Dan was born and brought up in a military family and he is on his way to be an excellent soldier. But this promising ambition is destroyed in the Vietnam War. Lt. Dan becomes legless through a war injury, which is a nearly fatal strike to him. Although Forrest saves his life, he complains about his destiny. “I was supposed to die in the field with honor. That was my destiny and you cheated me out of it. Now I am nothing but a goddamned cripple, a legless freak. This was not supposed to happen. Not to me. I had a destiny. I was Lieutenant Dan Taylor.” 10 In Lt. Dan’s mind the war is her life, he should die in that furious battle. He thinks the world is unfair. But Forrest cares nothing about it and regards Lt. Dan as his commander both physically and emotionally. When they meet again, Forrest tells Lt. Dan about his promise to Bubba. But Lt. Dan does not understand him and even laugh at him. So Forrest makes his other promise to Lt. Dan. At last he also carried his promise out. Forrest lets Lt. Dan change his life. And we also can see Forrest changes his mind. Destiny is on your own hand. We can see Lt. Dan picks up his confidence in that hurricane. It is so moving when Lt. Dan says to Forrest “I never thanked you for saving my life.” 11And at last Lt. Dan has new legs, fiancée, and also, in a rational sense makes peace with God. C. The Attitude towards Success\Failure Although Forrest Gump is unfortunately born with a rather low IQ and the muscle problem, he has already created a miracle and achieved many of incredible successes. 1. As a Master Sportsman of Rugby Forrest is a very simple man. I think that it is the thievery reason that leads him to great success. He becomes a football star just in a chance. What he knows is running. He even does not know what the rule is. But he does know his mother is very happy, and that is enough. 2.As a Hero of Vietnam War After leaving school, he is a war hero in Vietnam War because he saved lots of soldiers. We can see that Forrest is so brave and kind-hearted. Someone said Forrest has had such incredible success just because of his luck. But I do not think so. At first, Forrest has ran away from that dangerous place just like Jenny tells him before, but when he runs to a safe place he finds his friends Bubba is not following him and he is also in that place. So he runs back to help Bubba. But on his way to save Bubba, there are lots of soldier asked for help. Without thinking, Forrest takes them to the safe place. If you are in that situation, do you have the courage to save all the soldiers? Not everyone have that courage like Forrest. So he becomes the hero. And he also has the chance meet the president of United States, and even has a talk on TV. Different with other people, Forrest does not think he is higher than anyone. He meet Lt. Dan again at the New Year, when Lt. Dan asked him to do something for him, Forrest just says “yes” just like in the army. 3.As a Member of Ping Pong Diplomacy After Forrest become a member of Ping Pong diplomacy. He is invited to have a talk on TV: “I thought I was going back to Vietnam but instead they decided the best way for me to fight the communists was to play ping pong. So I was in the special services, traveling around the country, cheering up all those wounded veterans and showing how to play ping pong. I was so good that some years later, the army decide that I should be on the All-American Ping Pong Team. I was the first American to visit the land of China in like a million years or something like that. Somebody said would peace is in our hands. But all I did was play ping pong.” 12 Forrest does not care if he is on TV, all those things he wants to say is what his real feeling. 4. As a Millionaire Later, in order to carry out the promise, he becomes a millionaire by chance. He is faithful. He wants to keep his promise, so he becomes a millionaire. So when he has carried his promise out, he put all those to Bubba’s family and Lt. Dan. And he returns to home and to be common man. His is indifferent towards his success. When Lt. Dan writes to Forrest and tells him they will not to worry about money. But Forrest just says it is a less thing to worry about. He is an optimistic in anything. We can see that Forrest is never sorrowful. Forrest has something good that most of us do not have. D. The Tenacious Will for One Thing—Keep Running We can see Forrest runs a lot. That is his competence from the God. The theme of running provides us food for thought. Forrest runs right out of those a leg knighthead and he starts running, he never stops. He runs far away from the bullies. He runs through college on a football scholarship. He runs through the flame and smoke of war in Vietnam and is awarded a congressional medal of honor. Also he runs to meet Jenny and wins her heart at last, and he is an amazing runner. He runs from adversity to success, he runs from ordinary to extraordinary, he runs so fast, so attentively and randomly. Just like the feather that floats at the beginning and end of the movie. Forrest runs freely and naturally to get his own destiny. Although in the film Forrest tells the reporters that he thinks about nothing but just feels like running. “I just feel like running. They just could not believe that somebody wills all that running for particular reason.” It sounds like Forrest is laughing at those reporters. Yes, a lot of people think too much. We can see that his running dose have meaning in the film, and also, in his life, “My mama always said, you have got to put the past behind you before you can move on.” That is the key point of running. It is no doubt that his amazing running gift as a miracle affects his whole life. Besides, it is a reflection of his positive attitude towards life, especially, “running gives people hope for life”. After Jenny has left him, he begins to run across America and persists in doing it for a few years. At first I assume that it is a foolish way for him to do so, because he wastes too much time performing such an idle thing. But seeing the film for many times, I have waked up to that he is pursuing his meaning of his life. During his trip, he also has some accompaniers. Although these people have followed Forrest for a long time, they do not know the meaning of it. IV. Conclusion I think that Forrest has some virtues that maybe most of us don’t have. He is simple, kind, brave and cordial. I think this is the most important reason that leads him to great success. When we deal with something, we always consider if it is good for us, but Forrest never thinks of it. For example, he does not know why he joins the army. During the severe battle, he goes back to the battleground to save his friend in spite of great danger. And he does without think of the difficulty of it. Secondly, he is faithful. He has loved Jenny since he was young, and he never thinks of finding a better woman. To carry out the promise, he became a captain of a shrimp boat, and made a lot of money. Thirdly, he is optimistic in everything. We can see that Forrest is never sorrowful. I think we should have an optimistic philosophy. There must be lots of difficulties in every person’s life. Forrest can try his best to make his life perfect. So we also can try our best to make a colorful life. Just as that sentence says “Life is like a box of chocolates: You never know what you’re going to get”. The Feather, in my opinion, at the beginning and the end of the movie represents the destiny. The feather floats here and there; even a little breeze makes it fly. Everyone's life, either in the movie or in the reality, is always full of changes. There are two different opinions on destiny in this movie, one is that life has its own plan and nobody can change it, while the other one is that life depends on yourself. As far as I am considered, we can control our life just like Forrest. We should try our best to do everything that we want to do. At the end of the film, the beautiful feather is going on floating in the sky. Anyone who has ever seen the film Forrest Gump will learn that life is like the beautiful feather, which can be changeable with the breeze in the sky, but we should try our best to control it. And at last we will get what we want. In my opinion, a lot of people do not like Forrest Gump. They are much smarter than him, but they will not have the courage to keep the promise of shrimp. They may think keep such a promise is stupid. But “Stupid is as stupid dose.” That is Forrest’s particular character. Compared with Forrest, people today have too many complex desires in their lives, so when they meet those people like Forrest, they may regard them as stupid, but are they really right? We have lost so many virtues. From my point of view, we should take advantage of his merits to build up our new moral standards. Thus, we can lead a splendid life in the foreseeable future.
